If you’ve ever thought, I wish I could do ballet, but I’m too old, let me stop you right there. You’re not. If ballet is something that calls to you, you should go for it! Pursuing what you love at any stage of life is always worth it, and if you’re willing to put in the effort, you are fully capable of accomplishing things you once thought were impossible. My ballet journey over the past 25+ years has been far from easy, but despite those challenges, I keep coming back to it. With my new mindset in my mid-thirties, I appreciate ballet in ways I never did before, and that makes me love it even more.

Ballet isn’t just about tutus and pirouettes. It is about discipline, artistry, and the sheer joy of moving your body in a way that feels both powerful and elegant. It teaches strength, control, and resilience, both physically and mentally. And that is something I have experienced firsthand.

I trained pre-professionally when I was younger, but life and hip surgeries took me away from it for years. When I came back to ballet as an adult, I didn’t have to relearn my technique. I had to trust it. My training was still there, but my mindset needed work. I had to reframe how I saw myself, stop nitpicking every perceived flaw, and recognize the strength and artistry in my dancing.

I also had to learn something that changed everything. Most of the things I saw as “bad” in my dancing were things only I noticed. Others saw the grace, the movement, and the joy. I was the only one obsessing over tiny imperfections. Realizing that has freed me to enjoy ballet again and begin to dance with confidence instead of self-doubt. This is still an ongoing journey, but I’m making steady progress.

Ballet has made me stronger, improved my posture, and increased my flexibility. When I was younger, I always felt like the least athletic person in my elementary and middle school PE classes. I dreaded anything involving running or hand-eye coordination, but flexibility was the one thing I could do. Now, ballet and the conditioning I do alongside it (Pure Barre and Pilates) has helped me build strength to match that flexibility, and for the first time, I feel truly strong and physically fit. Returning to ballet as an adult and as a mother has challenged me in ways I didn’t expect, but it has also given me a community of like-minded people who love to push themselves and celebrate progress at any age.

So if you have ever watched a ballet class and thought, I wish I could do that, you can. Start where you are and enjoy the process. Whatever your passion is, don’t let the idea of being “too old” stop you. Today you’re the youngest you’ll ever be and there’s no better time to start.

Do what you love, now: Your future self will thank you for it 💙
